What is CBD?

The simple answer is that CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a natural compound found in the hemp plant (Cannabis Sativa). It is one of over 100 active Cannabinoids currently known to come from this controversial plant. Unfortunately, this is where a simple answer spirals into scientific and social complexity.

Cannabinoids include a variety of compounds found in the Marijuana and Hemp plant. The most contentious, recognized, and researched of which is THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). However, the most abundant, and potentially useful, cannabinoid is CBD(Cannabidiol). Other Cannabinoids include CBN (Cannabinol), CBG (Cannabigerol), and CBC (Cannabichromene). The Cannabidiol compound, although not as widely analyzed as THC, has recently been the subject of increased research. Increased scientific focus is due to the potential health benefits observed from medicinal marijuana and the THC Cannabinoid. Since CBD is the non-psychoactive counterpart, it has been hypothesized that the same health benefits observed in THC may also be found in CBD without the downsides of the THC induced high. In spite of the compounds similarities, the psychoactive effects exhibited by CBD are virtually non-existent as compared to those observed with THC. This gives users the potential to leverage the benefits of Cannabis without experiencing the physical and/or cerebral buzz.

These insights about CBD have led to scientific, clinical, and government based studies to uncover its hidden and intriguing potential. In fact, one clinical scientist at The University of Colorado has begun conducting research on how Cannabidiol may be utilized for veterinary purposes.  Furthermore, scientific and technological advancements have allowed for CBD abundant strains to be cultivated, as well as CBD methods of extraction to be refined. This has resulted in a market where CBD’s availability is becoming increasingly accessible, and its use more socially acceptable.

Basically, CBD is a Cannabis based compound which has garnered attention from curious consumers and researchers alike. As public interest continues to increase, research into its uses and applications are sure to not only be examined, but demanded. Though the basic answer to “what is CBD” might be simple, our knowledge of CBD’s benefits may take a lifetime to be uncovered.
